The Remote were originally a Faction Paradox experiment that got out of hand. They were an unpredictable lesser species. They had access to high level time technology and weaponry, driven by media signals. One of their colonies was interfered with by the Great Houses and became known as the "Broken Remote".

The Faction fitted the Remote agents with receivers that broadcast media directly into their nervous systems and biodata. The Remote were also rendered sterile, and were only able to reproduce using remembrance tanks. The remembrance tanks were also directly connected to the media, so with each generation, the Remote became more and more a part of the image-intensive culture fed to them by their receivers.

The Remote were originally created by Faction Paradox, who intended to use them as shock troops against the Great Houses. The plan originated when the elders of Faction Paradox noticed that many human colonies had become dependent upon their media, regarding the broadcast images and celebrity icons as more important than the actual politics of their world. The Faction’s initial attempts to influence the media of said colonies was interrupted by the House Military’s Second Wave. The House Military wiped out whole planets on which the Faction was seen to have an influence. The Faction evacuated many of the future-Remote and established new colonies for them in safe zones of the Spiral Politic.

Through the use of receivers and remembrance tanks, the Faction turned their agents into the Remote, meaning for them to be "unpredictable warriors". The Faction sent their new warriors to Simia KK98 to attack the Great Houses; the attack failed and most of the Remote were killed by the House Military. The Faction then cut their ties with the Remote, and they spread their forces throughout the Spiral Politic, eventually becoming the "unpredictable warriors" their creators meant them to be.

Technology

Remembrance Tanks allowed the Remote on Anathema to reproduce. A quantity of biomass would be placed in the remembrance tank and a headset would be attached. Citizens would come and literally 'remember' the person into existence. How a person was 'remembered' depended on the impressions that the person had imparted to the society. Faction Paradox used Gallifreyan biomass to remember Greyjan the Sane into existence.
