Heaven Smile is a terrorist organization in the video game killer7 headed by demi-god and main antagonist Kun Lan. While it is considered a terrorist organization, its members are actually demonic, mutated beings that also act as living bombs.

History

Heaven Smile first appeared at a meeting of the United Nations, where one of its operatives executed the organization's first suicide bombing attack. Hereafter, various other high-profile targets were hit, signaling the return of terrorism to the world. The killer7 is called in to deal with the threat, only to find it rising higher and higher. The major international powers debate for some time before eventually reclassifying Heaven Smiles as non-human, thus giving themselves the right to exterminate them with moral impunity. Although Kun Lan survives, the group's activities presumably come to an end with the death of the Last Smile. Additionally, Heaven Smile may have its deepest roots in Flower, Sun, and Rain, another Kill the Past title, which briefly features a clone of minor character Step Sding who has been transformed into a living bomb (and detonates, destroying the Lospass Island shopping centre.)

Creation of Heaven Smiles

Through the use of Kun Lan's God Hand, normal humans, willing or not, are transformed into Heaven Smiles. However, it is revealed in the course of Encounter, that just human flesh, alive or not, can be used in the making of Heaven Smiles. While this is true, flesh of the female gender was highly considered for the manufacture of the beings. While the process of creating Heaven Smiles is unknown, it is possible that the more elaborate and complex forms are actually created somewhere else rather than in an immediate vicinity.

Leader

Kun Lan is the central antagonist of killer7. As the director and embodiment of the Heaven Smile terrorist organization, he is responsible for nearly all of the game's major events. He is also the eternal rival of his equal and opposing force, Harman Smith, who represents Western civilization and culture where Kun represents Eastern civilization and culture. Harman may also represent good while Kun represents evil. In a striking paradox to this, however, Kun's representation of the God Hand is a creative force while Harman's is destructive. Kun Lan appears as a nominally Asian man with sallow gray skin similar to that of Aramata from Moonlight Syndrome. He wears a suit with a bright green jacket at all times, perhaps to contrast with the more reserved (and realistic) clothing of Harman Smith. Though normally somewhat cruel and emotionless, Kun Lan is prone to occasional bursts of mania. Kun Lan created the Heaven Smiles in what may be interpreted as a bid for world domination, but under the Imperialist Japanese United Nations Party rather than himself. He is first encountered at the end of Angel, where he sends an angel to attack the killer7 before revealing himself. Harman shoots his God Hand with his high-powered rifle, but Kun merely catches the bullet (being dragged several hundred metres in the process), declares war, and departs. He is seen once again in Sunset, Part 2, when he saves the life of UN Party leader Kenjiro Matsuoka in order to have him gain power for Japan. (The success or failure of this venture is dependent on the player's choice of whether or not to kill Matsuoka during the events of Lion, the final chapter.) Following this, Kun largely disappears save for a few scenes of playing chess with Harman in his Hasidically dressed, more godlike form. Later on, this form of Kun is killed along with Hasidic Harman when Young Harman appears and attacks both with his tommy gun. After Emir Parkreiner kills the Last Smile, it is revealed to have taken the form of Iwazaru, but with Kun Lan's face under the mask. Kun Lan makes his final appearance in the epilogue, which takes place in Shanghai 100 years after the main events of killer7. Here, Harman once again attempts to shoot Kun only to have him catch the bullet, to which Kun utters the game's final line, "Harman, the world won't change. All it does is turn. Now, let's dance." As a veritable god, Kun Lan has a great deal of sheer power, most of which is derived from his God Hand, which glows bright white when he uses it. Early in the game he demonstrates the ability to catch bullets with it, but more importantly, he uses it to transform regular humans into Heaven Smiles. This may suggests it is related to the Silver Eye of Flower, Sun, and Rain and The Silver Case. The God Hand is, furthermore, both a creative and destructive force, as demonstrated when he used it to save Matsuken. In addition to these more direct powers, Kun Lan is able to influence the state of the world through both magical and political means. He is also ageless, as evidenced by the epilogue 100 years after the end of the main action in killer7. Kun Lan has a strong rivalry with Harman Smith, with whom he wages a constant ideological, political and cosmic war. The two have confronted each other numerous times and in a variety of ways, from the brief skirmish at the beginning of Angel to the seemingly endless chain of chess matches he seems to be locked in eternally with the Hasidic incarnation of Harman. That said, while Harman appears in three different forms, Kun appears to have only one, in spite of his apparent ability to occupy multiple planes of existence at once. During their chess games, they engage in verbal battles as well, both having philosophical discussions and trying to undermine each other psychologically, as evidenced by Kun telling Harman a disturbing story about Emir Parkreiner's past in an effort to unnerve him, and Harman taunting Kun with "Do you know why [you always lose]? ...because you're a bad player." Kun and Harman may in fact be very carefully balanced counterweights to each other, each ensuring the other is unable to use their vast power to gain too great a hold on the world.

Types of Heaven Smiles

There are three basic types of Heaven Smiles: Those on whom genetic experiments were performed by inserting radioactive tumors, those who have been transformed into Smiles by the direct power of the God Hand, and those who have been created through replication or a Duplicator Smile. These are the main types of Heaven Smile:

Normal Smiles are the most common type of Heaven Smiles. Their Weak Point is a glowing weak spot. They are typical grunt Smile. Walks towards the player and self-destructs unless killed.

Running Smile are variations of the Normal Smiles. Their Weak Point is a glowing weak spot. They are the same as the normal smile, only it runs towards the player.

Camellia Smiles are a form of Heaven Smile in the video game killer7. While Heaven Smiles are bred as terrorists, Camellias are shown to be traitors to their kind, frequently assisting the Smith Syndicate in their efforts to destroy Kun Lan's operations. It is possible that Camellias were not manufactured like most Heaven Smiles, but were humans converted into Heaven Smiles by Kun Lan's God Hand. Though stark white in appearance, Camellias' entire bodies are stained with blood; this is a physical manifestation of their traitorous nature, as with KAEDE Smith's dress. Just as Iwazaru and Travis Bell offer advice in the field, Camellias too serve the player by indicating when the skills of a particular personality are needed. Camellias usually stand still trembling harmlessly if left alone; however, they will flee screaming if the Smiths approach them, and will detonate themselves by impacting with nearby solid surfaces. Successfully killing a Camellia provides a large quantity of thick blood, regardless of whether or not their weak point is hit.

Micro Smiles are a variety of Heaven Smile featured in killer7. They are first encountered in the Celtic Building during Target00: Angel, and appear in nearly every mission afterwards. Micro Smiles appear as tiny, humanoid figures whose wings allow them to fly. If left alone they will simply float around in circles in mid-air, but if they detect the player's presence they will fly towards them, eventually exploding into a bright flash of light upon contact. This deals no damage, but obscures the player's vision for a few seconds, making it difficult to see any regular Heaven Smiles in the vicinity. Their presence in an area can be deduced from the subtle chiming noise that accompanies them, as well as their distinctive high-pitched laugh. Their function, unlike most Smiles, is not to seek out and target normal humans, but to replenish supplies for Duplicator Smiles. Iwazaru describes them as 'delivery men' whose purpose is to sneak into areas undetected and supply the nest so it can continue producing Egg Smiles. These 'supplies' are presumably copious quantities of blood, as Micro Smiles come in two varieties: Black and Yellow, which, if shot, will completely restore the entire Smith Syndicate's health and awaken any sleeping personas, and Red and Blue, which will give the Smiths a large amount of Thick Blood.

Egg Smiles are creatures produced by Duplicator Smiles and roll towards enemies to explode and kill them.

Duplicator Smiles are a type of enemy in killer7 and a type of Heaven Smile. They take the form of hive-like structures mounted on a roof or wall. Although they are immobile and can barely be considered living, Duplicators are somewhat dangerous in that they spawn other Heaven Smiles at regular intervals, although these are always of the weakest variety. They also possess a seemingly indestructible carapace and are vulnerable only in their core. Yellow cores can be destroyed easily, but red cores can only be destroyed by Dan Smith's Demon Shells. Extremely large Duplicators are encountered in the latter half of the game, first in the Dominican Republic Church in Target04: Alter Ego and later in the Union Hotel and Coburn Elementary School in Target05: Smile. These Duplicators are so large that they take up all or most of the room they are situated in with strange, fleshy trunk-like structures, and have many more cores than the average Duplicator. Duplicators give rise to the second strain of Heaven Smile, those who were never human, which eventually aided the United States government in its bid to classify all Heaven Smiles as non-human and therefore able to be exterminated without moral concession.

Spiral Smiles are a variety of Heaven Smile in the game Killer7. Despite their name, they are actually giant balls that slowly roll towards players while producing a strange chiming sound. On the ball, there are several faces down the middle. As it rolls, it shows each of them in turn. One of these has a green outline; the player can only kill them by shooting this spot, which will count as a Critical Hit. These enemies can be incredibly useful if you need blood, as the only way you can't get thick blood from them is if you use MASK de Smith on them.

Another Smiles are a form of Heaven Smile in the video game killer7. First appearing at Restaurant Fukushima, Another Smiles are visually identical to ordinary Heaven Smiles. Instead of approaching the Smith Syndicate however, Another Smiles prefer to sneak upon the Smiths by crawling on the ceiling. When shot from the ceiling, Another Smiles persist to crawl toward the Smiths until they are shot or executed with a Down Attack.

Bombhead Smiles are enemies featured in killer7, and a variety of Heaven Smiles. They are first encountered by the Smith Syndicate at Restaurant Fukushima during the first half of Target01: Sunset. Bombhead Smiles are exactly what their name suggests - regular Smiles with powerful explosives strapped to their heads. Like most Heaven Smiles, they will begin to slowly shamble towards the Smiths as soon as they enter the room. However, due to the strength of their explosives any contact between them and the player will inflict significantly more damage than the average Smile. On the higher standard difficulties this will often be enough to instantly kill the weaker personas unless they are on full health. The only way to land a critical hit on a Bombhead Smile is to wait for its explosive headpiece to open (which is always accompanied by a distinctive, high-pitched laugh), which will allow you to shoot the weak spot on its head. Shooting the headpiece when it is closed will instantly kill the Smile, but will not yield any Thick Blood. As with regular Smiles, you can also simply shoot its body until it dies.

Mother Smiles are enemies featured in killer7, and a variety of Heaven Smiles. They are first fought in the KAKU Building during the second half of Target01: Sunset. Mother Smiles are essentially smaller, mobile versions of Duplicator Smiles, and as such are capable of spawning Egg Smiles. They are roughly three-four times larger than the average Smile, and move about using their long, gangly arms. Their torso features a large yellow core, like those of the Duplicators, which must be shot repeatedly in order to kill it. Below the waist the Smile's torso degenerates into a mass of tentacles and growths from which Egg Smiles emerge. If left alone the Mother Smile will simply stand there and occasionally produce invisible Egg Smiles; however, if the player gets too near or shoots it enough it will start to quickly walk on its hands towards them. The best way of dealing with a Mother Smile is to hit its core with a powerful special attack like Dan's Collateral Shot, which will kill it instantly. It is still possible to kill it normally at this point by shooting the core, but this is often tricky to accomplish before the Smile reaches the player.

Poison Smiles are enemies featured in killer7. They are a variety of Heaven Smile which first appear at the KAKU Building in the second half of Target01: Sunset. Poison Smiles appear similar to regular Smiles, although they are slightly larger, have a bulkier frame and are always purple. They constantly exude a dark purple mist, although this poses no danger to the Smiths. What distinguishes them from other Smiles is their limited invulnerability, which prevents them from being killed by anything other than a critical hit. If the player simply shoots them to death normally, they will fall down but instantly stand back up again. The only way to kill them is to hit their weak spot.

Phantom Smiles are enemies featured in killer7, and a special kind of Heaven Smile. First encountered at Restaurant Fukushima during the first half of Target01: Sunset, they are arguably one of the trickier varieties to deal with. Phantom Smiles are characterised by their warped and distorted appearance, as well as their unique teleportation ability. One part of their body (either the head or arm) appears grossly enlarged; shooting this instantly kills them. However, if you miss and hit any other part of their body, or simply shoot somewhere in close proximity to them, they will warp directly in front of you and detonate almost immediately. This makes them a major threat not only during their first appearance at the Restaurant Fukushima Vinculum Gate, but also on killer8 mode, where the player must take care to be especially accurate with their shots. If they are a fair distance away, using KAEDE is usually the safest way to dispatch them. It is possible to actually kill them if they teleport in front of you by either hitting their weak spot or countering at the correct time, although this generally proves too difficult to justify the risk.

Giant Smiles are enemies featured in killer7, and are a special variety of Heaven Smile. They make their first and only appearance in Target02: Cloudman, where they patrol the streets of Ulmeyda InterCity. As their name suggests, Giant Smiles are colossal Heaven Smiles. Apart from their increaed size and a slightly bulkier frame, they are visually highly similar to regular Heaven Smiles apart from the addition of a large, cyclopean eye in the middle of their forehead. This eye repeatedly opens and shuts, and is the Smile's only weak spot. However, the eye can be extremely tricky to hit unless the player uses a more accurate persona such as KAEDE. A more reliable way of getting past a Giant Smile is to simply let it approach (or run up to it). Its only attack is to topple forward very slowly and attempt to squash its target, at which point it will explode. All the player has to do is to get near it and quickly turn around and run away while it falls over (this is most easily accomplished if playing as Con Smith or Kevin Smith. If the player is far away enough, the explosion will do no damage.

Backside Smiles are enemies featured in killer7. They are a variety of Heaven Smile which first appears at the KAKU Building during the second half of Target01: Sunset. Backside Smiles are unique in that they appear to float several feet above the ground, unlike most kinds of Heaven Smile. They are virtually indestructible; however, if the player repeatedly shoots the sickles on their wrists enough, they will spin round, turning their back to the Smiths and exposing a vulnerable tumour-like growth on their back. Shooting this weak point will kill them instantly.

Protector Smiles are enemies in killer7. They are a special variety of Heaven Smile which are first encountered by the Smith Syndicate at ISZK-LAND during the events of Target03: Encounter. However, they are quickly superseded by their improved models, the Protector Z and Protector ZZ Smiles. Protector Smiles are large, bulky and slow. Their presence can be identified by their deep laugh and the tell-tale heavy clanking noise they make as they walk. Like most Smiles, they simply walk towards their target and explode; however, Protectors are covered in a layer of armour that renders them completely impervious to all forms of attack - except MASK de Smith's grenade shells. They are one of the few enemies in the game, along with the other Protector models, that MASK can obtain Thick Blood from.

Protector Z Smiles are enemies featured in killer7. They are a variety of Heaven Smile, more specifically an upgrade of the Protector Smile, and the precursor to the superior Protector ZZ Smile. Like its brethren, it is first encountered in Target03: Encounter. Protector Z Smiles behave identically to their counterparts. Appearance-wise, they are marked out by their green skin and silvery-white armour plating, which protects them from nearly all forms of damage. However, MASK de Smith can easily kill them by using Shock Shells against them. Despite its 'improvements' over the basic Protector model, it is soon surpassed by the superior ZZ model.

Protector ZZ Smiles are enemies featured in killer7. They are a variety of Heaven Smile, and the last in the Protector model line. They make their first appearance at the Blackburn Residence during the latter half of Target03: Encounter. Like their weaker counterparts, Protector ZZ Smiles are covered in a durable armoured carapace that makes them invulnerable to most kinds of weapons - only MASK's Focus Shells can kill them. They are distinguished from their cousins by the bright pink light which emanates from their chest panels, although their protective masks are similar to the basic Protector's. Despite their impressive appearance, their slow, lumbering speed means they are not a huge threat unless MASK does not have any thick blood.

Mithril Smiles are enemies in killer7, and a variety of Heaven Smile. They are first encountered by the Smith Syndicate in the Vinculum Gate at ISZK-LAND during Target03: Encounter. Mithril Smiles are characterised by their silvery, metallic protective armour and the distinctive clanking noise they make as they slowly walk towards the player. This armour covers the majority of their body, although their joints, hands, feet and face are left exposed. If the player shoots the armour enough it will shatter to reveal a normal Heaven Smile underneath, which will then run towards the player. However, since the armour does not entirely cover the Smile's body, the player can still land a Critical Hit on a weak spot instead of shooting its armour off.

Laser Smiles are enemies featured in killer7. A rare and dangerous variety of Heaven Smile, they are first encountered by the Smith Syndicate in the basement morgue at the Blackburn Residence during Target03: Encounter. Laser Smiles are one of the more extreme results of Heaven Smile development. Their bodies are strapped to a strange, immobile machine which appears to power a pair of laser goggles fixed to the Smile's eyes. This laser is highly lethal and can strike its target from quite a distance, requiring only a second or two to charge; however, the strain of firing the beam is so great that the Laser Smile will disintegrate by itself shortly after firing. The best way to deal with a Laser Smile, especially in killer8 mode (where the lasers will instantly kill most of the personas), is to kill it before it has a chance to register the player's presence. Another tactic is to have Kevin go invisible, run past it and then shoot it from behind.

Roller Smiles are enemies featured in killer7, and a variety of Heaven Smile. They are first encountered in the streets of the Dominican Republic during Target04: Alter Ego. Roller Smiles are visually identical to normal Heaven Smiles, but have a unique method of getting around. As soon as the player enters a room, the Roller will twist and contort its body into a ring-like shape, holding onto its feet with its hands. It will then proceed to roll towards the player very quickly and explode upon contact. While doing this they make a strange, reverberating high-pitched laughing noise. Due to their speed they are one of the most dangerous varieties of Smile - particularly in killer8 mode, where unless a persona's weapon strength is Lv.4 or 5 they will most likely crash into them before the player can kill them. One of the more reliable ways to kill them, especially on the higher difficulties, is to counter them just before they collide with a persona.

Broken Smiles are enemies in killer7, and a rare variety of Heaven Smile. They are first encountered at ISZK-LAND during Target03: Encounter. Broken Smiles, like Diver Smiles, have strange jetpack-like growths fused to their backs, although a Broken's jetpack is much larger and metallic-looking than a Diver's. However, unlike Divers, these jetpacks actually function, allowing the Broken Smile to quickly propel itself towards the player in an erratic, swerving fashion. Due to their speed and off-putting sense of direction they can be very hard to kill before they collide with the player, making them rather dangerous on higher difficulties.

The Ceramic Smile is an enemy featured in killer7, and a special variety of Heaven Smile. It is encountered by the Smith Syndicate at ISZK-LAND during the first half of Target03: Encounter. The Ceramic Smile is unique in that it is the only 'mini-boss' Smile to not be fought within the Vinculum Gate. Instead, it is fought in the Spinny-Spinny, a circular tunnel-shaped room located inside the Mystery House. It is much larger and bulkier than most types of Smile, but despite its ungainly appearance it is one of the fastest in the game. It is also averse to confronting the Smiths head-on; whenever it gets too near to the player it will make a small 'uh-oh' noise, turn around and run back the other way. This makes killing it somewhat tricky, as its only weak point is a small heart-shaped area on its chest. The best strategy is to simply wait for it to turn a corner and come into a view, and then quickly snipe its weak spot with KAEDE. Another tactic is to meet it head on with Con, surprise it and shoot it quickly in the heart before it has a chance to turn around. It should be noted that even though the Ceramic Smile tries to run away from the player, making contact with it will still result in the Smile exploding, instantly killing the persona.

The Galactic Tomahawk Smile is an enemy featured in killer7. It is a special variety of Heaven Smile which only appears once, at the Vinculum Gate in Coburn Elementary School during the events of Target05: Smile. The Galactic Tomahawk is quite different from regular Smiles, both in terms of its appearance and behaviour. It seems to be composed of numerous Smiles which have been crudely fused together into a pyramid-like mound of flesh, with one Smile rising out of the top. Like Laser Smiles, they cannot move, but instead fire missiles at the player. These missiles will not kill the Smiths instantly, but their speed and number mean they can quickly incapacitate a persona if not shot down. Despite its appearance and impressive-sounding name, the GTS can be easily dealt with by simply using Dan's Collateral Shot on it.

The Speed Smile is an enemy in Killer7 and a variety of Heaven Smile. It is encountered in the Vinculum Gate in the Celtic Building during Target00: Angel. The Speed Smile is a special type of Heaven Smile which can move at a higher-than-average speed. The Smile does not run, however; instead, it jerks and twitches its way towards its target, making a strange noise as it approaches. Although it is roughly similar to a normal Smile in appearance its body is twisted and deformed, and its face and limbs are stretched out at odd angles. It is relatively easy to kill, as it moves in a straight line and does not have any special abilities beyond its slightly quicker speed (later varieties of Smile, including Roller Smiles and Timer Smiles, are much faster).

The Timer Smile is an enemy in killer7. It is a special variety of Heaven Smile which is encountered by the Smith Syndicate in the Vinculum Gate at the Union Hotel during the first part of Target05: Smile. The Timer Smile has roughly the same build and frame as a normal Heaven Smile, but is covered all over in strange, protruding red lumps and tumours. It will steadily walk towards the player down the long hallway it is encountered in, and the only way to kill it is to destroy all the tumours. However, it has a nasty trick: once only one tumour is left, it will go beserk and run towards the player at high speed while flailing its arms madly, making it rather tricky to destroy the final lump. The best strategy for dealing with the Timer Smile is to use KAEDE to pick off the smaller lumps first whilst leaving one of the larger and more obvious tumours till last. This will make shooting the final lump much easier. If it becomes apparent that you can't pick off all the tumours in time, simply exit and re-enter the hallway to start over again.

Ulmeyda Smiles are enemies featured in killer7. They are a special variety of Heaven Smile which only feature during Target02: Cloudman. Ulmeyda Smiles are encountered throughout Ulmeyda InterCity, where they aimlessly run up and down the streets in straight lines before disappearing into thin air. They are distinguished from regular Heaven Smiles by their prominent yellow Texas Bronco t-shirts, making them resemble their namesake. Normally, an Ulmeyda Smile will completely ignore the player and will not even make any attempt to attack them unless they accidentally run into them; however, if the player shoots them even once and fails to kill them they will start walking towards the Smiths like a normal Smile. Ulmeyda Smiles are possibly the easiest enemies to kill in the game - landing a single shot on their t-shirts will instantly kill them and yield one coin, which can then be used at the Iron Crow diner to obtain figurines. Since it is so easy to land critical hits on them, it is possible for the player to easily build up a large kill streak in this way, although the amount of Thick Blood they yield is relatively little in comparison to most Smiles. It is never explained if Ulmeyda Smiles are meant to represent InterCity citizens who have been turned into Heaven Smiles, or if they are merely just normal Smiles who have been deployed to infiltrate the city.

Black Heaven Smiles, also known simply as Black Smiles, are enemies encountered in killer7, and are a special variety of Heaven Smile. They are encountered in the Coburn Elementary School gymnasium during Target05: Smile as part of the battle against Greg Nightmare. Black Smiles are possibly the toughest type of Heaven Smile: they are completely invulnerable to all weapons except Emir Parkreiner's Golden Gun, which will kill them instantly. In addition, being caught by their (unavoidable) attack will instantly result in death, no matter how much health the player has. Their only appearance is during the second half of the fight with Greg Nightmare, who spawns seven Black Smiles from his bloodied torso after his legs are shot off. The Black Smiles then proceed to leap off the gymnasium stage one by one (while the others pose) and hunt down each of the Smiths in turn. Since none of the Smiths' weapons can kill them, death is completely inescapable. However, when Garcian is forced to re-materialise he can pick up the Golden Gun lying on the floor and use it to dispatch the last Black Smile before killing Nightmare for good. Black Smiles look like more muscular versions of normal Smiles, and have completely black mottled skin.

Last Shot Smile is the final Heaven Smile in the video game killer7. Three years after Emir Parkreiner re-emerges from his Garcian Smith persona, the Heaven Smile threat has been minimized, and it seems only a single one remains. One of the more timid Heaven Smile breeds, Last Shot Smile flees from Parkreiner until, in the depths of Parkreiner's trailer, he is cornered and revealed to apparently be Iwazaru, whose unobstructed face is shown to be that of Kun Lan.[1] Parkreiner executes the Heaven Smile, permanently absolving himself of Harman Smith's war on Kun Lan forever. It is not entirely clear whether Kun Lan was Iwazaru, and by proxy Last Shot Smile all along, or if Last Shot Smile was a completely separate entity embodying the snare Harman and Kun Lan once had on Parkereiner.

Allies and Associates

The Angel is a character in the video game killer7. She is confronted at the climax of Target00: Angel by Harman Smith, where she explains how she will purge humans from the world and replace them with her "children," the Heaven Smiles. The Angel is encountered by Harman Smith at the top of the "Celtic" Building, where she resides in a large circular room on the fifth floor. She is proud that four Heaven Smiles, which she refers to as her children, have fulfilled their purpose by slaying and possessing the Red Gunners, but she expresses disappointment in the Smith Syndicate for killing the nine other Heaven Smiles she deployed in the building. Harman shoots the Angel's wings using his rifle, however she and Kun Lan mock him. The Angel's eyes become red and bloody and begin tearing blood down her face; four facial growths also spurt from her back where her wings were previously based. The Smiths circle around the chamber dodging the Angel's flaming projectiles and firing bullets into the four faces growing from her back. After destroying them all, the Angel submits and explodes in a shower of white feather-like particles. The Smiths proceed into the next room where they find her completely reformed, however. At this point she has become insusceptible to firearms, but Harman fires on Kun Lan's silhouette, causing the Angel to disappear entirely, accompanied by Kun Lan's maniacal laughter. The Angel resembles a typical anime character. She wears a black dress, a pair of long, white gloves and has two pairs of fragile, glassy wings. On her back are four red faces, which the Smith Syndicate exploit as her weakness. The meaning behind these four faces, and whether or not they represent the four slain Red Gunners, is unexplained. Hand in killer7 merely states that the faces are representations of "God's face," justifying that God's sense of humor is "terrifying." The Angel delivers her speech in a manner that is fanatically monotone, proudly declaring the purpose given to her and the Heaven Smiles. She appears to be fully devoted to Kun Lan, proclaiming him as her god tasking her "purge" the unwanted. After her initial defeat at the hands of the Smith Syndicate, she behaves more harshly when she returns accompanied by Kun Lan, adopting a condescending, rude and even vulgar demeanor. It is suggested that the Angel is somehow responsible for the creation of the Heaven Smiles, implying a link to Kun Lan's God Hand, however it is not made explicitly clear if the Angel is a separate entity from Kun Lan, or merely one of his disguises. During combat, Kun Lan's voice speaks to the Smiths, and after the battle Kun Lan admits that the Smiths were not fooled by his "trick," implying the Angel is a clever manifestation of Kun Lan himself.

Andrei Ulmeyda is a character in the video game killer7. He is the founder of First Life, Inc. and tycoon of Ulmeyda InterCity. Considered by some to be a cult leader, Ulmeyda is the Smith Syndicate's central antagonist in the "Cloudman" chapter, openly challenging Garcian Smith on national television. Born in Arkansas, Andrei Ulmeyda is the 27-year-old chairman and CEO of First Life Inc. After obtaining an excerpt of the Yakumo policy, Ulmeyda uses the document to shape his own utopian society in the middle of Texas. Meanwhile FBI agent Jaco Checkbox, having gained access to Miss Jacob, a device which predicts the outcomes of future events, travels to Ulmeyda InterCity to meet with Ulmeyda, on his path to ensure the obliteration of the Last Shot Smile. Checkbox, aware that Ulmeyda holds a piece of the Yakumo policy, convinces Ulmeyda that his life is in danger because of it, but with the proper preparations, he may be able to take control of his own fate. Ulmeyda pieces together that he must summon the services of the Smith Syndicate. Ulmeyda makes a special televised appearance in August 2010 delivering a speech on humanity being led astray by illusions and how he can lead them to "salvation." During his speech, Ulmeyda blows up a stadium where musician Stacy Spangles had been performing, killing the audience inside. It is with this act of defiance that he calls the attention of the Smith Syndicate, who track him down in his very own InterCity. During their confrontation, Ulmeyda admits to Garcian that he has in the past infected himself with numerous forms of viruses, but that above all he fears contracting the agent which transforms humans into Heaven Smiles. In spite of this, Ulmeyda has previously infected himself with Heaven Smile tumors, and overcoming their effects, extracted and distributed his own blood to his city's population through First Life. Garcian's meeting with Ulmeyda is cut short when a fleet of American government agents storm the scene and corner Ulmeyda, infecting him with a dose of Heaven Smile genes potent enough to transform him into a mutated form of Heaven Smile more fantastic than previously encountered by the Smith Syndicate. Ulmeyda's blood, as a Heaven Smile, explodes from his body in an eruption which kills all soldiers on the scene. Garcian is unaffected by Ulmeyda's hazardous blood however, and withstands the monster long enough to slay him, granting Ulmeyda a measure of absolution. Ulmeyda later appears to the Smith Syndicate as a Remnant Psyche, during their assault on Curtis Blackburn's residence. Ulmeyda may be Brazilian, as implied by his skin complexion, surname and the prominence of the Brazilian flag in Ulmeyda InterCity. His hair forms a dark brown afro and he wears black pants and a yellow T-shirt which reads "Texas Bronco." He also appears near the end of "Cloudman" wearing a spacesuit, which may or may not be used to contain his diseases. He also speaks like a cowboy. After he became a heaven smile, his whole body from the neck down became blue while his Afro and eyes are red with the ability to detach his hair, pushing it up with a organic looking tentacle which was his weak spot. Ulmeyda is very outspoken and shows an immeasurable amount of confidence in his actions, believing the measures he takes to be absolute and justified. He often uses a tone which can be likened to a church preacher, which enables him to be a successful leader and inspire the spirits of most of his citizens. He also displays the behavior of an impulsive thrill-seeker, as he relates his dangerous lifestyle as the only way he can enjoy living. This may explain why he infects himself with various diseases, including the Heaven Smile strain. Despite this, he appears to take great pride in his city and holds its citizens, especially Gabriel Clemence, in high esteem.

AYAME Blackburn is a character in the video game killer7. As an orphan, she is present at the Immigration Bureau where Curtis Blackburn attacks. After killing everyone in the building, Blackburn turns his gun on the girl, however her fate is not shown. It is later revealed that Curtis actually trained her in combat, dubbing her AYAME Blackburn in the process. AYAME inherits a variety of martial arts techniques from the assassin, coupling them with her own natural talents. An avid cosplayer, AYAME dresses in a Japanese schoolgirl uniform and hides her identity behind the mask of a typical anime face. Her young age, status as an orphan and the fact that she first appears in an amusement park all demonstrate the character's juvenile innocence, a common theme in many of Goichi Suda's works.

Greg Nightmare is a character in killer7. The US Secretary of Education, Nightmare is an obese, besuited man with tanned skin and short grey hair, and, according to both Kenjiro Matsuoka and the tapes left by Holbert, the true power behind the US Government. He was hanged in the Coburn Elementary School gymnasium by Benjamin Keane, who was envious of his power and influence over the US electoral system. After Garcian confronts Matsuoka in the gym, Greg comes back to life and attempts to take out the killer7 with the Golden Gun; the Smiths must shoot him from side to side until his trousers fly off, at which point they must shoot his bloody crotch until it explodes. Doing so, however, spawns 7 invincible Black Heaven Smiles. He is effectively the final boss of the game, unless the player counts the Last Smile. It is unknown whether he has any connection to Dimitri Nightmare.

Shinya Akiba is a character in killer7. He is an elderly member of Japan's ruling United Nations Party, and a close friend of fellow party member Hiroyasu Kurahashi. Together with his friend he helped rebuild Japan following its devastation during the Second World War. He despises the younger generation, especially inexperienced politicians like Kenjiro Matsuoka. Travis Bell describes him and Kurahashi as a pair of 'sly old foxes' who are the very 'incarnation of greed'. hand in killer7 describes them simply as 'dirty old men'. Akiba and Kurahashi are introduced at the beginning of Target01: Sunset Part 2, where they are lamenting the seemingly inevitable destruction of Japan. When Kurahashi taunts Matsuoka into shooting them, Akiba reveals that killing one's seniors is the only way to move up within the party, and taunts Matsuoka by telling him he won't have any future if he doesn't take them out. Surprisingly, Matsuoka actually does kill them both before attempting to turn the gun on himself; when Kun Lan appears, however, both Kurahashi and Akiba are revived as special Heaven Smiles. Akiba personally gives Kun Lan permission to show him the light with the power of his God Hand. After Matsuoka leaves Akiba, Kurahashi and Kun Lan all seemingly vanish; however, the two elderly politicians are found soon afterwards by KAEDE Smith, who snipes them in their exposed brain matter whilst they throw lumps of their own brains at her - when KAEDE shoots Kurahashi's tie, messing it up, Akiba exposes the vulnerable back of his shattered skull whilst he readjusts his friend's tie, and KAEDE promptly finishes him off for good. The pair return one year later as Remnant Psyches at ISZK-LAND during the events of Target03: Encounter where they warn the Smiths that Japan's survivors will have their revenge on the world before vanishing forever.

Hiroyasu Kurahashi is a character in killer7. He is an elderly member of Japan's ruling United Nations Party, and a close friend of fellow party member Shinya Akiba. Together with Akiba he helped contribute to Japan's reconstruction following the Second World War. Like his friend, he has a strong dislike of the younger generation. Following Toru Fukushima's death at the hands of Liberal Party assassin Julia Kisugi, and with Japan's fate still as yet undecided, Kurahashi and Akiba taunt the young and relatively inexperienced new leader, Kenjiro Matsuoka, over his inability to achieve anything, as well as his lack of courage. When Matsuoka gets frustrated with them, Kurahashi tosses him a gun, goading him to shoot them both; he reveals that they only got their positions by killing their own predecessors. When Matsuoka actually does shoot them both, they are brought back to life as special Heaven Smiles by Kun Lan, who, it is implied, they have a degree of familiarity with. Following Matsuoka's 'conversion', they remain behind in the UN Party boardroom and await the Smiths; in the ensuing battle they toss explosive lumps of their own brain matter at KAEDE Smith, who snipes them in their exposed skulls. Kurahashi and Akiba later return as Remnant Psyches at ISZK-LAND during the events of Target03: Encounter, where they defiantly warn that though Japan has seemingly been destroyed, the 'maggots' of its population have survived, and will proceed to have their revenge on a world that stood by and did nothing as it was obliterated.

Curtis Blackburn is a character in the video game killer7. Infamous in the circles of organ trafficking, he serves as the central antagonist in the "Encounter" chapter of the game. Blackburn is dressed at all times in a white-and-black bodysuit, split to the waist, with cuffs and leggings that end in a striped pattern. He also wears bluish-black gloves and sports a moustache and goatee. Indicative of his advanced age, Blackburn's hair has turned completely white, earning him the nickname 'Whitehair.' Blackburn is both dangerous and extremely vengeful, having killed at least two people believed to have betrayed him (although one of these targets, Dan Smith, had been framed). When scouting for youth he is interested in trafficking, Blackburn is also known to kill any bystanders in the area of his target. Travis Bell implies that Blackburn is not only interested in young girls for business purposes, but is also sexually attracted to them, as Bell claims Blackburn lives alone and keeps female orphans for company. Blackburn commits numerous acts of violence towards women, such as the rape of Pamela Montana and the decapitation of her daughter Mary, the shooting of a prostitute and the taxidermy Blackburn performs on the bodies of his orphans. Iwazaru describes Blackburn as neurotic, as evidenced by the wide-scale security system fitted throughout his home. Heaven Smiles run rampant around the property as well, and may serve as an added security measure. When he reappears as a Remnant Psyche, Blackburn implies he had grown nervous of having his crimes discovered, and had spent years secretly hoping to die, possibly out of guilt for his actions. His feeble assertion that he only wanted to "shed light on my life," and his last words, "Life... Wonderful indeed," give the impression that Blackburn was unsuccessful at finding meaning in his life, desperately trying to fill the void with acts of destructive violence. Dan and Bell summarize Blackburn as a "sick old man" and a "pitiful pervert," while Harman Smith calls him nothing more than a "punk with a gun." Blackburn is an extremely skilled gunman and wields a pair of pistols at all times, both of which he's able to fire accurately even though neither has mounted sights. He is highly unique in that he appears to be the only person outside the Smith Syndicate capable of killing Heaven Smiles, although this may be due to his knowledge of them thanks to his involvement in their production. Blackburn also has the ability to bend physics, appearing to fly down the corridors of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and levitating upward from a lying down position when confronted by Dan in his basement.

Jean DePaul is a character in killer7. He is a young French member of the International Ethics Committee's assassin division, and is the main target of the Smith Syndicate in Sunset Part 2. He is described by Hiro Kasai as an 'elite international operative' who has personally bumped off many government officials, but Travis Bell describes him as a 'sub-par assassin', although he notes that he is a 'suave dude'. hand in killer7 mentions that he is a real 'ladies' man', and that he believes professional wrestling to be strongest fighting style (despite its essentially fake nature). DePaul is first encountered by MASK de Smith in the kitchen at Restaurant Fukushima disguised as a chef, having been dispatched by the IEC to eliminate Julia Kisugi and ruin the Liberal Party's chances of resolving the crisis peacefully. He is seen standing amidst the carnage wrought by the Heaven Smiles clutching a gun, threatening to shoot MASK if he comes any closer; when MASK does not back down he fires at him, only for MASK to literally headbutt the bullet out of the air before dispatching an invisible Heaven Smile behind DePaul. MASK asks him about the location of the other chefs and waiters, but DePaul states that they have all been killed by the Heaven Smiles. MASK advises him to flee the restaurant before continuing on his way. Iwazaru later mentions that he is sure he has seen him somewhere before. It is revealed in hand in killer7 that he manages to retrieve the Yakumo and smuggle it out of the restaurant after his meeting with MASK. Shortly after, Kasai informs Garcian that DePaul is actually an IEC assassin who has been sent to disrupt the secret talks being held between the US and Japan in the KAKU building in order to ensure Japan's destruction. The Smiths' new objective is therefore to take him out. MASK eventually encounters DePaul in the building's basement, where he ridicules MASK and Lucha Libre before attempting to take him out; his hi-tech, state-of-the-art body armour makes him impervious to firearms, but MASK simply shoots the roof above, causing it to cave in and collapse on him. Realising that all is lost, DePaul shoots himself in the mouth, killing himself instantly. After the Smiths find that the talks have collapsed and all 4 delegates have shot each other, DePaul reappears as a Remnant Psyche. He expresses admiration for MASK, encouraging him to return to the ring, whilst musing on his passion for watching professional wrestling in his childhood. He also informs the Smiths that Kenjiro Matsuoka has the Yakumo, foreshadowing Emir Parkreiner's eventual showdown with him on Battleship Island four years later by warning them that the 'war won't end' until they finally meet Matsuoka and kill him.

Julia Kisugi is a character in killer7. She is a young Japanese woman who works as an assassin for Japan's Liberal Party. In the course of her duties she was dispatched to assassinate Toru Fukushima, an ex-member of the Liberal Party who proceeded to become the leader of the rival UN Party, after he cut all ties between Japan and the US by annulling the Asian Security Treaty. The Liberal Party had wanted to extend the Treaty in order to ensure good relations with the American government; however, Fukushima's actions made this impossible, and so Kisugi was ordered to take him out in order to allow the Liberal Party to gain political dominance over Japan and restore its ties with the US. She was also given a second objective: to retrieve the powerful document in his possession known as the Yakumo Cabinet Policy, or Yakumo for short. To this end Kisugi went undercover at Restaurant Fukushima, posing as Fukushima's secretary. During Harman Smith's meeting with Fukushima, she shoots the elderly politician in the head and threatens Harman in the mistaken belief that he has the Yakumo; in reality, Jean DePaul had already obtained it and fled following his meeting with MASK de Smith. Harman manages to escape, and a short while later the Smiths confront Kisugi amidst the burning wreckage of the restaurant. In a quick-fire shootoff between her and Con Smith she is defeated, but rather than let the Smiths finish her off she chooses to do it herself: after delivering one final warning to the Smiths to beware of the danger posed by the Yakumo she detonates an explosive hidden her in her necklace, killing herself instantly. Kisugi reappears a year later at Ulmeyda InterCity as a Remnant Psyche; she thanks the Smiths for freeing her from the joyless world of underground killing, revealing that all she had ever wanted were 'simple pleasures' like taking a holiday somewhere sunny like Texas. She then vanishes, having gained some small degree of happiness from the 'triviality of her death', as hand in killer7 puts it.

The Handsome Men are a nine-man assassination group in killer7. They are an intentional parody of the Japanese "sentai" superhero genre, whose stories focus on groups of fighters in brightly coloured, form-fitting uniforms.

·         Handsome Red

·         Handsome Blue

·         Handsome Light Brown

·         Handsome Dead

·         Handsome Purple

·         Handsome White Pearl

·         Handsome Pink

·         Handsome Gold

·         Handsome Black

Almost every member takes the name of their uniform's colour. Although most sentai series restrict their characters to more conventional, cardinal colours, the Handsome Men have a few of these and a number of unconventional ones as well. In spite of their name, the Handsome Men has two female members, Handsome Light Brown and Handsome Pink. Handsome Red appears to be the leader and frontman of the group. According to Christopher Mills, the Handsome Men were developed by the US military in order to combat the global Heaven Smile threat. In addition to being an official assassin organization, the Handsome Men are also featured as characters in a comic book created by Trevor Pearlharbor and published by ZTT Comics. When the real-world group appears and begins to carry out the stories he writes in reality, Pearlharbor believes himself to be controlling them; in actuality, he is only a seer, and his comics are simply predictions of what they will do. LOVE Wilcox, a teenage girl and participant in the underground Internet, may be the actual coordinator of the Handsome Men's actions. The Handsome Men appear in Target04: Alter Ego. A television news announcement reports that a group resembling the comic book characters has assassinated Democratic Party member Steve Thunderson during a meeting of Congress. As a result, Mills dispatches the killer7 to kill Pearlharbor, who is writing their adventures into his comics in the week preceding their actual actions, and therefore appears to be controlling them, or at least some sort of terrorist. The killer7 tracks Pearlharbor to his studio in the Dominican Republic, where he is in the midst of drawing a scene of himself killing Dan Smith, and thus believes he cannot die. However, Handsome Black suddenly appears and fires his Handsome Wink at Dan, who successfully dodges; the attack hits Pearlharbor, killing him. Dan kills Handsome Black in retaliation; Handsome Red appears on the scene and, surveying it, concludes that Dan killed both Pearlharbor and Black unprovoked. He calls for a revenge match to determine which of the groups is stronger, naming Broadway, New York as the site of the challenge. A series of one-on-one matches ensues:

·         Harman Smith kills Handsome Red with his rifle.

·         Handsome White Pearl outshoots Con Smith.

·         Coyote Smith shoots and kills Handsome Gold.

·         Handsome Light Brown shoots KAEDE Smith as she reloads.

·         Handsome Dead beats Kevin Smith when his knife throws miss.

·         Dan Smith shoots Handsome Blue in the head.

Handsome Purple seemingly defeats MASK de Smith, but the latter is suddenly reborn in a more stylized luchador outfit and with more powerful, faster-firing grenade launchers, and kills Purple with a charged shot. As Garcian Smith is about to fight Handsome Pink, however, she suddenly transforms into the shape of LOVE Wilcox, and the two call a truce. She tells him that she "wrote the story," and seems to believe that the company she works for, Electro Inline Inc., was responsible for her mentor Pearlharbor's death.16-bit credits then roll, followed by a shot of Kun Lan's hand reaching towards the screen, possibly implying that the player has just played a competitive multiplayer game against Kun Lan over the Internet. Handsome Black displays the Handsome Wink special attack, a beam of destructive energy. Additionally, each member takes on the particular weapon and associated abilities of the member of the killer7 whom they fight.
